BIOGRAPHY

A notable leader in civic and community activities, Dr. Marcus S. W. Mc Broom was also a practicing psychotherapist, marriage counselor, lecturer and writer, with offices ranging from South Central Los Angeles to Beverly Hills. He was also a research associate at Cedars Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Mc Broom, the son of Reverend and Mrs. George Mc Broom of Columbus Ohio, was one of 13 children. He traveled around the world and also extensively in the United States.

He was the first member of his family to go to college. He received his education at Wilberforce University and later served at Tuskegee Army Air Hospital School. He was a graduate of Columbia University and  received his Doctor of Education degree at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Dr. Mc Broom was a newspaperman and had been an outstanding champion of civil rights for all Americans, particularly as a public speaker. He was always politically active and astute. Eleanor Roosevelt, with whom he corresponded, frequently invited him, as a member of a small group of African American Wilberforce University students, to the White House. He went on to become a Special Assistant to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on problems of discrimination in the U.S. Air Force.

Dr. Mc Broom befriended and worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He also participated in numerous debates, one of which included Malcolm X as a participant on the L.A. based Joe Pine radio show.  Dr. Mc Broom also served as a speechwriter and colleague of the late Senator Robert Kennedy.  (Use Additional links for more information about Dr. McBroom and Senator Kennedy.)


Marcus Mc Broom  was always a patron of music and the arts. He and first wife Marie, founded the Lemac School of the Arts in New York City (prior to his relocating to Los Angeles with second wife Pearl.) Their school was frequented by such great talents as Sidney Poitier, Harry Belefonte and Sammy Davis Jr. During his time living in New York, he befriend Jazz legend Charlie Parker. Chairman of the board Frank Sinatra and Diahann Carroll  became noted family friends, after he moved to Los Angeles. Marcus loved to mingle with Hollywood Royalty and frequently attended the Academy Awards!

He and first wife Marie Lee were married in New York City. They had two daughters, Marcia Leanne and Dana Annette.

His third marriage was to Katherine Martinez. Their wedding was held in Oahu Hawaii. They had two sons and one daughter; Laura Jennifer, John Marc Robeson, and James Ali.

Today Cathy McBroom is living in Hawaii. Marcus's youngest daughter Laura lives in Texas raising her four beautiful children with husband musician Jerold Cox. Youngest son James is a proud husband and Father of the family's newest member.
 

As a deeply devoted Father, he exposed his children to his great appreciation for the arts, which later influenced most of them to pursue careers in the filed of Entertainment: Marcia a model, dancer and actress ("Beyond the Valley of the Dolls", "Jesus Christ Super Star") Dana an actress, singer, writer director and choreographer (Leadbelly, Grace Jones), Lorelei   singer, songwriter, producer (The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Sister Sledge), Durga a.k.a. Pamela, actress, singer, songwriter (Flash Dance, Pink Floyd, Blue Pearl,) Laura (local L.A. R&B bands and numerous Gospel engagements). His sons have excelled in computer work, business management and theology.

He shared offices with his nationally famous (former) wife, F. Pearl Mc Broom M.D. (Internist and Cardiologist) at the Julian Ross Medical Center in Los Angeles.

He went on to work along side his long term friend and colleague Fred Weaver III, M.D. (Psychiatrist) in private practice and with his Institute For Creative Living in Los Angeles. Dr. Mc Broom was the President of the L.A. Pan Hellenic Council and had been the official lecturer for the County Conference on Human Relations. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Bets fraternity and staff psychotherapist for Holman Methodist Church. Both Drs. Mc Broom were life members of the N.A.A.C.P. and he had twice been a member of the L.A. NAACP s executive board.

Following his retirement from the Los Angeles County Probation Department’s youth division, (for which he served as a councilor and therapist,) he continued his work with Fred Weaver III, M.D. in Community Psychiatry at The Charles Drew, Martin Luther King Medical Center (Hawkins Community Mental Health Clinic). They consulted many mental health and addiction programs in South Los Angeles California. He was a very active member of the Los Angeles Community. He wrote weekly articles in numerous news periodicals, and was a speaker and regular participant in the Science of Mind Church in Los Angeles. Forever loyal to his family and friends, he always promoted uplifting programs for self-awareness and inner growth, which extended to those in his community.

Dr. Marcus Mc Broom, Ph.D. came a long way from his Ohio farm boy roots, to become a noted and respected member of the African American community. His influence helped to shape the accomplishments of his Internationally renowned children, who are scattered throughout the globe. His daughters Marcia Mc Broom-Small, Dana Manno, live in New York City, working in the fields of Education and Entertainment. Lorelei Mc Broom,  in Los Angeles also continues her work in Entertainment and administration. Daughter Durga (Pamela) Mc Broom- Hudson is recently married and  lives in Northern California, working in the fields of Entertainment, body work and Real Estate development. Daughter Laura Mc Broom- Cox lives in  Texas, working as an Educator and homemaker. Son John Mc Broom lives in Japan and is an active member of our U.S. Naval forces. He is studying theology, law and aviation. Youngest son James Mc Broom, based in Los Angeles  is an active member of the U.S. Armed Guard and specializes in Business management.

Dr. Marcus Mc Broom passed away from respiratory failure following a bout with pneumonia and pancreatic disease in 2000. His grandchildren range from Marcia’s sons Jeremy Landess (Jeremiah Hosea) and Gregory Landess, Dana’s daughter Chenana Manno, Lorelei’s son Miles Litteral, Laura’s children Jakaan, Elle, Aaron, and Mia Coxx, and John and James are Fathers as well.

Though many have passed on, the McBroom family continues to grow and prosper.

I dedicate this page to the memory of my father. He was always an inspiration to me! He taught me that anything I wanted to achieve, could be achieved. He told me to keep my eye on the prize and to pursue my goals without fear. His courage and pioneering spirit has given his children an incredible legacy! He is loved and missed by us all.
